The Nativity by Jacopo Tintoretto (Venetian), reworked 1750s. Museum of Fine Arts Boston. X-radiographyrevealed that the painting was made from the lower section of an older painting. “The two large female figures of the Virgin Mary and an older woman, perhaps Saint Anne, were recycled from a vertical painting of the Crucifixion. The sketchy background scenes, depicting the Journey of the Magi and the Annunciation to the Shepherds, were added by an assistant when the canvas was transformed into a horizontal format.” (MFA Collections website)
